" I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. Chapter 11
Trace Scout & Jem's evolving view on the nature of courage and comment how this evolution is directly tied to their changing perception of Atticus, as well as their changing perceptions of Boo Radley. Specific chapters are in Chapter 1, wherein the children view courage as something physical; Chapter 9 in which town attidudes toward race are revealed; Chapter 10 when Atticus shoots & kills a rabid dog; Chapter 11 , when Atticus talks about real courage, Chapter 15, in which Atticus risks his own life to protect Tom Robinson from a lynch mob and , of course, Chapter 20, Atticus's speech in defense of Tom Robinson. For Boo, Chapter 1 introduction to Boo & the Radleys; Chapters 4-6, the gifts; Chapter 26, Scout reflects on her early views of Boo abd Chapters 28-30 when Boo saves the children & Scout likens him to a mockingbird. I think that real courage is moving out of your comfort zone to do something that would benefit someone,or yourself. Courage is when you make a vital descision that is the fate of a dilema. Like standing up to a bully, Doing something outrageuos, knowing you'll get picked on. Dare to be different. Making a cooperate descision on a bussines plan, a doctor trying to save her patient. Courage is everywhere. It comes in doses, but the priciple is the same. Standing up for yourself to do what is right.
I somewhat agree with Meredith. I just think that there is more to courage. I think that courage is not only being different and leaving your comfort zone, but doing something that you believe in. I think that Atticus' quote really sums up courage (when he says basically that you probably won't win but you still try anyways because it's something that you want to do). I think that is exactly what courage is. This is why I think that Mrs. Dubose has courage; she tries to get off drugs, even though it probably won't help her and she will probably die anyways. I think that the experience with Mrs. Dubose and the quote that Atticus says about courage was a form of foreshadowing. I think it is foreshadowing the Tom Robinson trial, and why Atticus is taking it on. Even though Atticus knows that he probably won't win the case, he is still going through with it because he knows that it is the right thing to do. I think Atticus (unintentionally) calls himself courageous.
Yes. I agree with Meredith and Viki. I think that courage is when you do things that are really hard for you to do, but you believe in what your doing, so you have the strength to keep on fighting. I think that Atticus has courage because he is fighting for Tom Robinson, and he risks his life and his kid's lives. I think that Mrs. Dubose has courage because she is fighting to get off drugs. I also think that Boo Radley has courage, because he leaves his house and shows his face to save two kid's (that he doesn't even know) lives. When I was reading Viki's comment I saw that she pointed out when there was foreshadowing. I hadn't noticed this before but now it makes sense to me.
I also agree with what has been said. Ms. Dubose, Atticus, and Boo Radley all show incredible courage. For a man that has been locked in his house for a majority of his life, it must have been terrifying to leave. And not only was he leaving his safe haven, he was also going to attend to stop a murderer to save two children's' lives. It is incredible that he was able to overcome his fear to save their lives - but that is what true courage is about. I heard once that you can be courageous and absolutely terrified at the same time, and that is completely true. True courage is doing what is right, even if you are in complete fear.
I agree with what everyone has said, to me courage is doing something that you don't want to do, but will help benefit in the future. to me no one in the jury had courage, they did not dare to be different and stand up for what was right.
Real courage is standing against the odds, making an honest attempt regardless of the reliablilty of a beneficial outcome. For example, a soldier at the Alamo fighting of the Mexicans would be courageus because he knew he was probably finished. However, a rich man betting his fortune on the stock market would be courageous if the stock market was falling. Both attempts are most likely fatal, but they try anyway. Trying. That is what matters.
I think that real courage is doing something, even when you are a afraid to do it and standing up for your beliefs, no matter what. Atticus has a lot of courage because he always stands up for what he believes him, even when there is a lot of opposition. I agree with Ali that the jury is not courageous. They knew Tom Robinson was innocent, but convicted him because they were scared to do something new and different.
i think courage is when you are against all odds. like facing a a threat or facing your fears. one more example is if your in war w/ another country that courageous.
courage is when you stand up for yourself and others around you even if you are not sure that you are going to win the fight or descussion or whatever you are standing up for. i like meredith's way of saying it is when "moving out of your comfort zone".
I fully agree with what everyone has said. If i had to define courage myself. i would say, "courage is doing something to benefit yourself, and others, even if it is putting your life at risk (like war), or standing up for someone that gets picked on by the meanest person in the grade. Greg, you pointed out a perfect reference. The jury, was not, in any way courageous. They went along with the social ladder of the time, and voted against who they knew, was innocent--Tom Robinson.
I agree with what everyone has said so far. Courage to me is when you try something and are unsure of the outcome. Like Meredith said, its going out of your comfort zone, and like Evan said, its standing up against the odds. Courage is a complex thing. Most people have experienced a time in life when the right thing to do isn't always the easy thing. Atticus was very courageous when he decided to take the Tom Robinson case, because defending an African American man was unusual. He knew that it would affect him and his family, which was the hard part, but defending Tom was also the right thing to do. Mrs. Dubose was brave and courageous when she decided to fight her addiction so she could die 'free'. Even though this was a hard thing for her, she did it anyway because it was what she considered to be right. Boo was extremely courageous for saving the Finch children. Like Alyssa said, he had been inside his house for many years, so going outside was not normal. By going to save the kids, Boo left his comfort zone by a large margin, but he did it because it was what the children needed.
I agree with what meredith said, courage is moving out of your comfort zone. Courage is making an important decision, even if it doesn't help yourself.
I agree with all the above responses, but i think that courage isn't just what a policeman does or a fireman. Courage is to speak the truth or do to something you're afraid to do. When i was in 5th grade I was snowboarding and i would say i am an experienced snowboarder. One day i found the perfect mogul and decided that i should try a backflip. Although i didn't quite land it and ended up in the hospital; the fact that i tried to do something i was deathly afraid shows courage.
I think that courage is doing something that you would normally not do. Courage is standing up for someone. It is standing up for what you believe in, such as your religion, or answer to a math problem. It is sticking with your gut instinct, and following through with it. It can even be something as little as turning the corner in an Xbox shooting game, knowing your friend is there, ready to shot you. Courage can be so many things, but those are just a few.
a lot of people on movies or TV shows try to encourage courage, like in Roots, Kunta Kinta (Toby) keeps fighting for freedom even though he knows it is fruitless. although sometimes fighting for your beliefs can cause you trouble in the end it is worth it. like the Alamo. they fought to the death- and they did not die unnoticed for later there cause won.
what i also think courage is running for government position or maybe even standing up for someone who you don't like but you feel it is right to do.
Ali brings up a good point. Connecting Social Studies to Reading, the men fighting at the Alamo showed a lot of courage. There were only 200 of them and 4,000 Mexican troops - but they still stood there, ready to fight for what they believed. They knew they would die. But they firmly believed that defending the Alamo was the right thing to do - and so, to the moment of their death, they were extremely courageous.
I agree with what everyone has said so far. I have seen times when people showed courage in a modern society too, not just in the book. One example is when people helped each other out on 9/11. Ordinary people risked their lives while fighting in the rummage to help complete strangers get out. This is a courageous action because the people were doing things for people other than themselves. This is something that not everyone would do, and I think the people who helped save lives should be honored as heroes. Some of these people were firemen and policemen and some were not. Many of the firemen and policemen were honored in 9/11 for helping people get out of the rummage, but ordinary people were doing it too. I think that society needs to rethink courage. Both the firemen/policeman and ordinary people did the same thing, but they are being honored completely differently. I think society needs to stop associating courage with careers.
courage can mean many things. it can mean saving somones life from a fire, or it can also mean somthing more simple such as speaking up and disagreeing with watever one else is saying, especially if you know what you are saying is right.
courage can be many things like greg said it can be saving someone from a fire or facing your fears is courage. in TKM Atticus is courageous because he defends a black man. i would have done the same thing if i were in his position despite i'm both black and white
Atticus is right about what he says about courage, I think. He says that courage is more than a man with a gun. A gun is very powerful, but courage requires a different kind of power. It has more to do with whether you are brave enough. With a gun to defend yourself with, you aren't really being brave. Being courageous would be like trying to solve a problem without pulling out a gun. The second part of the quote is also right, in my opinion. He says courageous is when you know that you're already in trouble, but you go ahead and try anyway. Atticus says that Mrs. Dubose is the bravest person he has ever met, but I think he is the bravest person he knows, even though that sounds weird.
Courage can be found in many places. Anyone or anything can have courage, including birds. My house has a birdbath and one day there was a blackbird that wouldn't let any other birds near it. When another bird came, the blackbird would fly at them and drive them off. Then, one really small bird flew right at the blackbird that had taken over the birdbath. The blackbird was so surprised it flew off and didn't come back. All the other birds went straight to the birdbath. It probably took a lot of courage for the little bird to fly at the blackbird. However, the little bird's courage paid off.
Courage is doing something that is unexpected. You cannot do something once and be courageous. You cannot do something. Acts aren't courageous, although you may think it is. Its the thought, and intentions
I agree with most people so far. courage is something that requires brevery and not just doing something like shooting someone.
Courage is hidden within many peoples and comes out when you least expect it. It is a special trait that only few can truly keep forever.
i totally agree with mrs. berkowitz courage is something more than just trying to be a man with a gun in your HAND courage is standing up for what you think is right like if your friend was being made fun of you could help him by telling them to stop.
i think that courage is when you make a decision on doing what you think is right. like a person standing up to someone bigger than them. like me standing up for the lady in king kong against king kong. even though i would die against him in a fight.
courage is like a cat facing a dozen dogs at the same time. or a mice standing up to a lion. or the opposite would be the lion who had no courage from the wizard of oz. i also agree with everyone i got some love for ya. ganja ganja ganja
